Its purpose is to automatically test the relays, by th e acquisition and processing of outputs of Particle Impact No ise Detection instrument, and the algorithm of their feature extraction, to determine whether or not they have loose parti cles inside them, furthermore, to take the place of the subje ctive man-made testing method. In this paper, under the consi deration of the require of automatically testing loose partic les inside the relays in spacecraft, the engineering applicat ion is emphasized; the Virtual Instrument (VI) technique is u sed to study and practice the method of automatically detecti ng loose particles inside the relays in spacecraft. First, th e condition of data acquisition and signals rocessing is pres sed; the concept and features of VI are definitely defined; t he structure system of PC-based VI is put forward; and with s uch structure system, a kind of PC-based data acquisition car d intrument is achieved, which has the function of successive data acquisition and waves record. With 40KHz sampling frequ ency, this system has a resolution of 12 bits, and the extend ed memory or hard disk of Personal Computer determines its me mory depth. Its targets meet with the require of automaticall y testing loose particles inside the relays in spacecraft. In summary, the main results of this paper are: 1. The structur es and features of VI determine the design scheme of overall structure of the PC-based data acquisition card instrument. W ith the development and application of computer technology, t here are profound changes in the field of instrument and meas urement. The VI is made up of several hardware functions moul ds, and is organized through software. Its core is to resolve the standardization of hardware and software in order to enh ance the capacity of system's integrity, mutual utility and a pplication. Users can assemble much better measuring system i n use of the features of VI's function-user-defined, future- f unction-reamed, high measuring accuracy and speed. 2. The har dware designing process of the data acquisition card instrume nt with two analog inputs is analyzed in detail. Some advance d techniques such as First-In-First-Out memory (FIFO) memory, software virtual panel, flexible logic control circuit and t he full use of resources of PC are used in the overall layout. Some hardware and software techniques are used to minimize t he disturbance in or out of the system. 3. The system managem ent software, which includes the equipment driver model, the management software of data acquisition and the application s oftware of data processing are introduced. The equipment driv er model provides a port between hardware and management soft ware; the management software of data acquisition provides co ntrols of system hardware, data acquisition and virtual panel; the application software of data processing provides some pr e-processing methods and the analysis of signal power spectru m. 4. The process of the sample data pre-processing and analy sis of the power spectrum are introduced in detail. Judgement s are made to determine whether or not the relays in spacecra ft have loose particles inside them. The algorithms are simpl e, efficient and with clear physical meanings, the rate of co rrection is high than that of the subjective man-made testing method.
